The finish line of the Sparkasse 3-Länder-Marathon sits inside Bregenz's ImmoAgentur Stadium, a short walk from the lakefront, which makes the day after the race one of the easiest in this whole collection to plan: nothing requires more effort than a flat walk and a cable car ride.

October in Bregenz: early autumn on Lake Constance brings cooler air and clearer skies than midsummer, though wind off the lake and the possibility of low cloud can affect Pfänder's summit views on any given day. Check conditions before committing to the cable car trip.

There's no transport to plan for the first half of the day: the lakefront promenade runs directly from the harbour area, flat and paved the whole way, past the Bregenzer Festspiele's floating stage, the same landmark the marathon course itself passes.

Bregenz Lakefront and Pfänder

The promenade along Lake Constance is wide, paved, and largely flat, with benches at regular intervals and views back across the water toward Germany and Switzerland, the same countries the marathon course touched the day before. It's a genuinely easy walk to manage on tired legs, with no fixed distance required. The floating stage of the Bregenzer Festspiele, a genuine architectural landmark that draws 160,000 visitors each summer for its open-air opera productions, is visible from much of the route.

The Pfänder cable car, departing from a base station a short walk from the harbour, climbs to around 1,064 metres in about six minutes, with no walking required for the ascent itself. At the summit, wide views open up over Lake Constance and, on a clear day, into Switzerland and Germany as well as across Austria. A short, flat circular path near the top offers a modest extension for anyone who wants to stretch their legs gently without a real climb, and there's a restaurant at the summit for lunch with a view.

Return is the same cable car back down, followed by the same flat lakefront walk into central Bregenz, where the town's compact centre offers cafés for a slower afternoon before heading onward.
