After the Campo Grande Marathon: Fazenda San Francisco

The Route: Campo Grande → Miranda area (night) → Fazenda San Francisco → Campo Grande Logistics: About 266 km by road from Campo Grande to the farm, according to a regional operator. Give the farm's name to your driver, only "Pantanal", because a general destination in a map app can send you to the wrong part of the region. Marathon Month: July Duration: 1 night

A marathon on Sunday leaves Monday for resting and the long drive for Tuesday. A single night in the Miranda area breaks up the drive so that the farm day does not start with a 266 km drive and a queue of tired people at a gate.

July in Campo Grande: The airport's July figures for 2001 to 2010 give a mean of 21.7°C, a mean daily minimum of 16.6°C and a mean daily maximum of 28.5°C. Take those as a guide for the city only. Conditions in the Pantanal differ, and road access and water levels vary through the year. A visit in July does not promise any animal sighting.

Night One: Miranda Area

Book a room in the Miranda area for the Tuesday night and keep the main luggage there if the property agrees. Rates and availability change, so ask a local tourism contact or the farm which properties guests commonly use. Ask the farm how guests reach it from town and what time to arrive. Do not assume a taxi from the hotel will find a farm gate on its own.

The Farm Day

Fazenda San Francisco's own day-use programme includes a photographic safari or trail, a chalana boat outing, lunch and a guide with insurance. It is a reserved programme and not a daily drop-in. Book it before you travel and ask what the walking involves, because the trail will test legs that ran 42 km three days earlier.

Choose the boat outing first and the trail only if your legs allow. Take a layer for the morning and sun protection for the middle of the day.

Getting Home

Return to Campo Grande on the Wednesday afternoon by the same road, about 266 km. Campo Grande (CGR) is the airport. Taxis wait outside arrivals at all hours, and buses 409 and 414 stop outside the terminal. Leave a night in the city before an international flight rather than driving from the farm to the airport on the day.
