This entry sits differently from the others on this list. Auschwitz-Birkenau is the site of the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp of the Second World War, and a visit here is a deliberate, serious undertaking, not a casual add-on to a marathon trip. It is included because many runners travelling to Kraków choose to visit while they're in the region, and because the practical planning around it, booking, timing, physical demand, deserves the same honest treatment as any other entry.
Planning the Visit
Entry to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum requires a booked time slot, and English-language guided tours in particular can sell out well in advance during busier months. Book online before travelling rather than assuming availability on the day. The full visit, covering both the Auschwitz I and Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz II) sites, typically takes three to four hours and involves considerable walking across uneven ground and gravel paths between the two sites, a genuine consideration on legs that ran a marathon in the days before.
The museum does not permit large bags inside the site, and there are luggage-storage facilities at the visitor centre. Photography rules vary by area within the site and are posted clearly on arrival.
Oświęcim Itself
The town of Oświęcim, where the camp sits, is otherwise a modest, ordinary Polish town, and there is little reason to plan additional sightseeing here beyond the museum visit itself. A simple meal near the station before the return train is a reasonable way to close out what is, for most visitors, an emotionally demanding day, and treating the journey home as a quiet one rather than folding in further activity is worth planning for deliberately.
Getting Back
Direct trains and buses to Kraków run at regular intervals through the day; check the current timetable before finalising a return time, and allow a wider margin than usual, since the visit itself can run longer than planned.
