Wrocław's Old Town is genuinely flatter and more spread out than Kraków's compact centre, a real consideration if Cracovia Marathon's cobbled Old Town streets have left your legs wanting an easier surface for the following days. April here tends to run mild and often clear, past the worst of winter but before the city's main tourist season builds.

Night One: Rynek and the Gnomes

Wrocław's Market Square (Rynek) is one of the largest in Poland, flat and cobbled in a gentler way than Kraków's centre, with the Gothic Old Town Hall anchoring one side. Small bronze gnome statues are scattered across the city, a genuinely local quirk that gives an easy, low-stakes activity for a first evening spent mostly on foot at whatever pace feels comfortable.

A short walk crosses into Ostrów Tumski, Cathedral Island, connected to the rest of the centre by a series of small bridges over the Oder's channels. The island is flat, atmospheric after dark under its gas lamps, and centred on the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, whose tower is reached by lift rather than a climb.

Where to stay: Hotel Monopol, a historic property directly on the Rynek, puts you in the centre of everything without a morning walk. For a simpler option, ibis Wrocław Centrum sits a short tram ride from the square.

Night Two: Centennial Hall and a Slower Pace

Centennial Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage building a tram ride from the centre, is worth the trip for its scale alone, an early-20th-century reinforced concrete dome still striking today. The surrounding park (Pergola and Japanese Garden) offers flat, level walking if the weather is kind.

Where to eat: Restauracja Jadka, set in Gothic cellars just off the Rynek, serves modern Polish cooking in a room built for sitting still. Check current Sunday and weekday opening hours before arriving, since some Wrocław restaurants run reduced hours out of peak season.

Getting Home

Direct trains to Kraków Główny run at regular intervals through the day; check the current timetable at koleo.pl or the PKP Intercity site before booking a specific departure.
