Desert Safari
Half-day or full-day 4WD experiences run from operators across the city, typically including dune driving, a stop for camel photos, and a desert sunset. January is the comfortable season for this, with daytime temperatures in the 20s Celsius cooling quickly after dark. This is not a trip for the day immediately after the marathon; the jolting 4WD sections are unkind to legs that ran 42.195 km that morning, so building in at least one recovery day first is worth it.
Hatta
Roughly 90 minutes to two hours from the city, Hatta sits in the Hajar Mountains and offers a genuinely different landscape from the coastal race corridor: a turquoise reservoir lake, hiking trails, and a heritage village with restored watchtowers and a fort. The Hatta Dam area is popular for kayaking on the reservoir, a low-impact activity that suits legs still recovering better than a hike does.
Where to Stay
Hatta has a small number of resort-style properties built around the mountain and lake setting, a genuine change of pace from Dubai's beach and city hotels, and worth booking ahead given the limited stock.
Getting Back
The drive back to Dubai from Hatta takes roughly the same 90 minutes to two hours as the outbound trip, entirely by road within the UAE.
