The Dubai Marathon is held in January. This is not a coincidence - it is the only month in which running a marathon in Dubai makes physiological sense. Summer temperatures in the city regularly exceed 40°C with high humidity; January mornings, with a 6am start, run at 16-22°C with comparatively low humidity. The conditions are good for fast running, and the elite field here is consistently one of the strongest assembled anywhere. Multiple world records have been set on this course, including Paula Radcliffe's 2003 world record at the time of 2:15:25.

The loop runs along the Jumeirah coastal strip, one of Dubai's most affluent and tourist-accessible areas. The Burj Al Arab hotel is visible from sections of the course, sitting on its artificial island off Jumeirah Beach Road. The start and finish are in the same location on Umm Suqeim Road outside the Madinat Jumeirah resort. The field is small by world marathon standards - approximately 3,000 marathon finishers - which gives the race a contained, elite-focused character quite different from the mass-participation events of London or Chicago.

Direct entry means no ballot, no lottery, no guaranteed-place charity option to navigate. Register when entries open in September; the race does sell out.

Weather

January in Dubai: race time temperatures of 16-22°C with low humidity and a 6am start before the sun has risen significantly. These are genuinely good running conditions by Gulf standards - specifically the reason the race is scheduled in January. By mid-morning the temperature rises quickly; faster finishers are done before it becomes relevant, but slower runners in the back half of the field will notice the warmth building after 9am. The Jumeirah coastal location means occasional sea breeze. Bring sunglasses for the final kilometres as the sun rises.

Official Websitedubaimarathon.org
Elite EntryElite invitations handled separately through race organisation

The Dubai Marathon is direct entry with no ballot. Registration opens in September for the following January's race. The small field - approximately 3,000 marathon places - sells out. Register promptly when entries open rather than waiting for a late-registration window that may not exist. The official website is dubaimarathon.org.

Entry fees are in UAE dirhams. For international runners, the currency is effectively tied to the US dollar (1 USD is approximately 3.67 AED), which makes the maths straightforward. Check the official website for current pricing and any additional registration requirements for non-UAE residents.

Expo and Number Collection

Check dubaimarathon.org for the current year's expo location and dates. The expo location and format can change between editions; confirm before making travel plans. Number collection must be completed before race morning.

Getting to the Start

The start is on Umm Suqeim Road at the Madinat Jumeirah. There is no Dubai Metro station close to the start area - the Red Line's nearest station (Mall of the Emirates) is approximately 2km away with no convenient onward connection. Hotel transfer or taxi is the standard approach for most runners. Runners staying at the Madinat Jumeirah or Jumeirah Beach Hotel can walk to the start in under ten minutes.

The 6am race start requires early arrival. Aim to be at the start line at least 45 minutes before your wave. If travelling by taxi, account for the possibility of limited cars at 5am on a normal January morning - pre-book through your hotel where possible.

The Course

The course is a loop running along the Jumeirah coastal strip. Umm Suqeim Road and the Jumeirah Beach Road corridor are among the most manicured stretches of urban road in the world. The Burj Al Arab appears on its island off the coast in the early kilometres. The course is flat throughout; the only gradient of note is the occasional gentle rise of a road bridge. The sea is visible for significant sections.

January conditions at 6am mean the first half of the race takes place before sunrise. The road surfaces are smooth and consistent. Pace management on this course is primarily a matter of not going out too fast in the dark cool of the early kilometres before the sun and the rising temperature become factors.

The Finish

The finish gantry is on Umm Suqeim Road, the same location as the start. Post-race collection, refreshments, and bag retrieval are in the finish area. Runners staying at Jumeirah beach hotels can walk back; taxis are available from the finish area.

Where to Stay

The Jumeirah beach strip is the correct base for the Dubai Marathon. The start and finish are both on Umm Suqeim Road at the Madinat Jumeirah, and hotels along the Jumeirah Beach Road corridor are within walking distance of the course. January is peak Dubai tourism season - not marathon-specific, but the city fills up across all hotels regardless. Book three to four months in advance; the premium Jumeirah properties fill first.

The Jumeirah beach strip runs roughly from the Burj Al Arab south toward the Marina. The start/finish at Umm Suqeim Road sits in the middle of this strip. Staying north of the start (toward JBR) adds a short taxi to the start line; staying in properties adjacent to Madinat Jumeirah removes the transport variable entirely.

Madinat Jumeirah
Umm Suqeim Road  ·  0.1km (0.1 miles) to finish

The mock-Arabian resort complex at the start and finish. The race begins outside its gates. Multiple restaurants, waterways, beach access, and the most convenient position on the course. The post-race return to your room requires no transport at all.

Jumeirah Beach Hotel
Jumeirah Beach Road  ·  0.3km (0.2 miles) to finish

On the beach adjacent to the Burj Al Arab. The wave-shaped tower is visible from most rooms. Race morning: walk to the start. Post-race: beach recovery. One of Dubai's best-positioned hotels for a marathon stay.

Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach
Jumeirah Beach Residence  ·  3.5km (2.2 miles) to finish

On the water at JBR, slightly north of the course. Strong value for the location tier. Beach access, pool, reliable service. Taxi to the start takes under ten minutes.

Sheraton Jumeirah Beach Resort
Jumeirah Beach Road  ·  1.2km (0.7 miles) to finish

On the beach, 1km from the course. Good facilities for post-race recovery including a spa and several pool areas. A solid mid-luxury option that does not carry the Madinat or Jumeirah Beach Hotel price premium.

ibis Dubai Jumeirah
Al Dhiyafah Road, Satwa  ·  2.0km (1.2 miles) to finish

Budget option in the Jumeirah area, no beach access, but close to the race zone and significantly cheaper than the beachfront properties. Taxi or app-based car to the start is straightforward and inexpensive.

See & Do

January is the most comfortable month to be outdoors in Dubai. The Jumeirah beach strip, the Burj Khalifa, the historic Creek district, and the Al Quoz arts area are all accessible in January heat that reads as pleasant rather than oppressive.

Burj Khalifa observation deck

The world's tallest building at 828 metres. At The Top (Level 124) and At The Top Sky (Level 148) both give a view across the city, coast, and desert that makes Dubai's scale legible in a way that street-level does not. 25 minutes by taxi from the Jumeirah beach strip. Book in advance - tickets for the popular evening slots sell out days ahead. In January, the outdoor terrace at Level 124 is comfortable. The ground-floor Dubai Mall entrance (directly adjacent) is the largest shopping mall in the world by total area, if that is something you want to verify in person.

Dubai Creek and the souks

The old creek area in Deira and Bur Dubai: the Gold Souk, the Spice Souk, and the abra (traditional wooden water taxi) crossing between the two banks. 30 minutes by taxi from Jumeirah. The architecture is 1960s low-rise and the scale is human rather than monumental. This is the part of Dubai that existed before the oil money changed everything, and it functions as a working commercial district rather than a visitor attraction - the Gold Souk sells gold at spot price plus commission, and the Spice Souk sells frankincense, saffron, and cardamom to local households as much as to tourists.

Desert safari

Half-day or full-day 4WD desert experience from various operators, with departures from the city. January is the best month for desert activity - 20-25°C daytime, cooling quickly after dark. A standard half-day includes dune bashing (if that is what you want), camel riding, and the option of a sunset in the desert landscape south and east of the city. The Hajar mountain foothills are visible in the far distance. Book through your hotel rather than third-party apps for the most reliable pickup. Not suitable on the day after the race; allow at least one day for recovery before the 4WD sections.

Alserkal Avenue

The Al Quoz arts district, approximately 15 minutes by taxi from Jumeirah: a converted industrial area of contemporary galleries, independent cafés, a cinema (Roxy Cinemas), and design studios. The correct cultural counterpoint to the mall-dominant Dubai narrative. The gallery programme changes frequently; check alserkalavenue.ae for what is currently open. January is within the main exhibition season.

After the Race

The Dubai Marathon runs in January - the best month for outdoor travel in the wider Gulf and Levant region. Abu Dhabi is 90 minutes away and requires no flight. Muscat is a short domestic hop. Jordan in January is cool, clear, and manageable at a post-marathon pace. All four itineraries below assume legs that have had at least one day of recovery.

Day trip1.5 hours by car or coach
Abu Dhabi: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: capacity for 41,000 worshippers, white marble throughout, 82 domes, free entry. The Louvre Abu Dhabi (Jean Nouvel, 2017): a permanent collection spanning 5,000 years of human civilisation housed in a building that is itself the primary reason to visit. Abu Dhabi is the quieter, more considered city.

1 night2 hours by car (visa required)
Musandam Peninsula, Oman: the Strait of Hormuz fjords

The Musandam Peninsula sits at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula above the Strait of Hormuz: dramatic mountain and sea fjords, dhow boat tours, snorkelling in genuinely clear water. Khasab is the base. A UAE/Oman border crossing is required; check current visa requirements before travelling. The landscape is extraordinary and remote.

2 nights1.5 hours by flight from DXB
Muscat, Oman: the Gulf's most coherent city

The Mutrah Souk (the best traditional souk in the Gulf: frankincense, silver Khanjar daggers, rose water), the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and the Corniche seafront. January: 22-28°C. A quieter, more culturally coherent Gulf city than Dubai. Royal Jordanian and Oman Air fly direct.

4 nights3 hours by flight (Royal Jordanian or FlyDubai)
Jordan: Petra and Wadi Rum

Petra: the Nabataean city carved into rose-red sandstone - the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), the Siq canyon approach, the High Place of Sacrifice, the Monastery. Walk the full 15km Petra trail on day two when the legs have recovered. Wadi Rum: the red sand and granite desert valley 2 hours south, available by jeep or camel. January in Petra: 8-15°C (bring layers). January in Wadi Rum: 12-18°C.
