The Musandam Peninsula sits separated from the rest of Oman by a stretch of UAE territory, at the northern tip of the Arabian Peninsula above the Strait of Hormuz. Getting there means a land border crossing rather than a flight, so passport and visa requirements should be checked directly against current UAE and Oman government guidance before travelling, not assumed from a previous trip.
The Fjords
The peninsula's mountains drop straight into the sea, creating a landscape of steep-sided inlets that has earned it the "Norway of Arabia" comparison, applied loosely but not unreasonably. Dhow boat tours are the standard way to see the fjords themselves, typically departing from Khasab and including stops for snorkelling in clear water along the way.
Khasab
The peninsula's main town and the practical base for a one-night visit: dhow tour operators, a small fort worth a brief stop, and enough basic infrastructure for an overnight stay without expecting a resort-town experience. This is a trip built around landscape and boat time rather than a town itself.
Where to Stay
Khasab has a limited number of hotels rather than a wide choice; booking ahead matters more here than in Dubai or Abu Dhabi given the smaller supply.
Getting Back
The return drive to Dubai retraces the border crossing and takes roughly the same 2 hours as the outbound trip. Build in extra time at the border itself, since crossing times are less predictable than the driving time alone suggests.
