After Grandma's Marathon: Canal Park and the Lakewalk

Grandma's Marathon finishes at the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace in Canal Park, and for runners not travelling further afield, the district itself has enough to fill a slow, low-effort day without needing a car or a plan made in advance. Mid-June on Lake Superior can swing from cool and foggy to warm and clear within the same day, so this route stays flexible rather than fixed to a single weather assumption.

The Lakewalk

A flat, paved path running for several kilometres along Lake Superior's shore directly from Canal Park, the Lakewalk is the single best recovery walk available immediately after finishing. There's no meaningful gradient anywhere along it, and benches appear at regular intervals for anyone whose legs need a break every few hundred metres. The path can be joined or left at any point, so there's no obligation to walk its full length in one go.

Great Lakes Aquarium

Right in Canal Park, this aquarium focuses on the Great Lakes and regional freshwater species rather than the more familiar tropical-reef format most aquariums lean on. It's small enough to see properly in an hour or two, entirely indoor and involves minimal standing-heavy walking, a sound option if the lake weather turns while still keeping the day interesting.

Canal Park shops and restaurants

The historic warehouse district around the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace holds Duluth's densest concentration of shops, cafés and restaurants, most within a five-minute walk of each other. Grandma's Saloon & Grill, the restaurant the race itself is named for, sits here too, worth a stop even for runners who ate elsewhere straight after finishing.

Return to a Canal Park hotel from anywhere on this route is a flat walk of well under fifteen minutes, with downtown Duluth's slightly wider restaurant selection a short taxi ride away for anyone wanting to extend the evening further.
