Two nights is enough time in Hamburg to let the legs recover properly and still see a city built almost entirely on flat ground, which is exactly what the day after a marathon calls for. The direct ICE from Hannover Hauptbahnhof reaches Hamburg Hauptbahnhof in around 1 hour 15 minutes with several departures every hour; Deutsche Bahn's discounted Sparpreis fares are released roughly six months ahead of travel and are considerably cheaper than the walk-up Flexpreis fare, so booking the outbound leg as soon as the race date is confirmed is worth the small amount of planning it takes. April in Hamburg means long daylight, a working harbour still busy with shipping traffic, and weather that swings between bright and blustery within the same afternoon: a waterproof layer earns its space in the bag more often than a sunhat does.
Nights One and Two: Hamburg
Hamburg grew up as a Hanseatic trading port, and that history is still legible in the water everywhere: the Elbe estuary to the south, the Alster lakes cut into the city centre, and the network of canals through the old warehouse quarter. Almost none of it involves a hill.
The primary recovery asset is the promenade around the Binnenalster and Außenalster, a fully paved, flat lakeside path with benches at regular intervals and no meaningful gradient anywhere along it; a loop of the smaller Binnenalster alone takes twenty to thirty minutes at an easy pace, while the full circuit of both lakes runs to roughly seven kilometres for a day when the legs have more to give. The Speicherstadt, a UNESCO-listed warehouse district built on timber piles over the water, is best explored on its level cobbled quaysides rather than by climbing into any of the museums housed inside the old buildings, though the Elbphilharmonie's public plaza at the edge of HafenCity is reachable by escalator rather than stairs and gives a wide harbour view for the effort of standing still. St. Michael's Church (the Michel), the city's Baroque landmark, has a lift to its tower viewing platform, a sensible substitute for the spiral staircase the day after 42.195 kilometres. The Landungsbrücken harbour front, a short walk or a single S-Bahn stop from the Speicherstadt, gives a wide, flat vantage point over the working port without requiring a single flight of stairs, and a slow-moving harbour ferry along one of the public HVV lines is a reasonable way to see the docks from a seat rather than on foot.
For accommodation, look toward a well-connected mid-range hotel near Hamburg Hauptbahnhof for the shortest possible walk with luggage, or a hotel closer to the Alster for quieter, more residential surroundings within easy tram or U-Bahn reach of the centre. For food, the fish market district and the surrounding Landungsbrücken area run a strong line in fresh seafood, and a simple plate of Fischbrötchen (a fresh-fish sandwich, usually herring or salmon) from one of the harbourside kiosks is a low-effort, high-reward first meal after two days of travel and recovery; for a sit-down dinner, the traditional Hamburg dish of Labskaus, a hearty mash of corned beef, potato and beetroot, is worth seeking out in one of the older harbourside taverns for something regionally specific rather than generic. Both meals ask nothing of legs that have already done their work for the week; the effort in Hamburg is meant to sit in the sightseeing, not in the eating.
Getting Home
The ICE back to Hannover Hauptbahnhof runs on the same roughly hourly pattern and takes around 1 hour 15 minutes. From Hannover Hauptbahnhof, the S5 suburban line reaches Hannover Airport (HAJ) beneath Terminal C in about 18 minutes, a straightforward connection with no separate airport-transfer ticket required beyond a standard local fare. Allow a reasonable buffer between the two trains at Hannover Hauptbahnhof rather than booking a tight connection, and check current ICE and S5 timetables before finalising a flight time. Two nights is enough for the flat sights without needing a third day to recover from the recovery trip itself.
