The finish line on Friedrichswall is a good place to stop running for a while, and Hamelin gives the legs a full extra day to recover before the return journey. A direct regional train leaves Hannover Hauptbahnhof roughly every half hour to hour depending on the time of day and covers the distance to Hameln Hauptbahnhof in around 45 minutes with no changes, worth checking on the day since regional timetables shift a little between seasons. April in Hamelin arrives with the town midway between empty winter streets and the Rattenfänger open-air performances of high summer: the crowds are thinner, the Weser is often running high with spring meltwater, and the half-timbered facades along Bäckerstraße and Osterstraße photograph well without a queue of visitors in the frame.
Night One: Hamelin
Hamelin sits on the River Weser and owes its international recognition to the medieval Pied Piper legend, first recorded in the town's own chronicles centuries before it became a fixture of European folklore. The old town survives almost intact and represents one of the more complete examples of Weser Renaissance architecture anywhere in Germany, a distinctive regional style built from sandstone quoins and decorated gables that is specific to towns along this stretch of the river.
The primary recovery walk is the Altstadt loop itself: fully paved, flat throughout, and compact enough to cover the main sights in an unhurried hour without repeating a street. From the station, it is a level ten-minute walk to the old town's edge. The Rattenfängerhaus (Pied Piper House) on Osterstraße, its ornate 1602 gable one of the most photographed in Hamelin, marks a natural starting point; the Hochzeitshaus (Wedding House) nearby carries the town's daily glockenspiel performance, worth timing a coffee stop around rather than standing and waiting. For a flatter, quieter stretch away from the old town's cobbles, a section of the riverside promenade along the Weser offers paved, level walking with benches facing the water, a reasonable alternative if the legs are done with cobblestones for the day. The Münster St. Bonifatius, the town's Romanesque and Gothic collegiate church near the Markt, sits on level ground and involves no climbing beyond the low church steps at its entrance, a reasonable indoor stop if the weather turns during the afternoon.
For the night, look toward a straightforward mid-range hotel in or immediately around the Altstadt, within level walking distance of the station and the main sights, or a quieter guesthouse a short taxi ride out for a calmer night's sleep after the noise of race weekend in Hannover. For dinner, the old town's restaurant cluster around the Markt and Osterstraße runs from traditional Lower Saxon cooking to lighter, more contemporary menus; a simple regional dish with a good beer list is an easy, low-effort choice for a first night of proper rest, and booking ahead is sensible if travelling on a weekend.
Getting Home
From Hameln Hauptbahnhof, the same direct regional service returns to Hannover Hauptbahnhof in around 45 minutes. From there, the S5 suburban line runs beneath Hannover Hauptbahnhof out to Hannover Airport (HAJ) in about 18 minutes, a simple, well-signed connection that needs no advance booking beyond a standard local transport ticket. Build in a buffer for the walk between platforms at Hannover Hauptbahnhof and check the current S5 timetable before fixing a flight time, but the connection itself is short enough that it rarely dictates the shape of the day. For a flight out later than the early evening, there is no particular reason to rush the Hamelin leg of the trip at all; the town rewards an unhurried single night more than a hurried one.
