Baden-Marathon Karlsruhe finishes on the track inside Carl-Kaufmann-Stadion, and Stuttgart is close enough by direct train that a runner can be checked into a hotel there before the evening is over. September in Stuttgart carries no seasonal closures or blooms specific to it worth flagging; the city's museums run their normal year-round programme and the Schlossgarten's trees are still in full leaf, not yet turning. Direct InterCity Express services run from Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof throughout the day, journey time around 35-40 minutes, with slower regional services taking closer to 50; no advance booking is required for a journey this short.

Nights One and Two: Stuttgart

Stuttgart sits in a bowl of vineyard-covered hills, unusual for a major German city, and while the surrounding slopes carry real gradient, the valley floor where the city centre and its main park sit is flat and paved, which matters for a visitor two days removed from a marathon. The Schlossgarten runs in a long green corridor from the Neues Schloss near the centre out toward the Rosensteinpark and Wilhelma zoo and botanical garden, several kilometres of paved, level paths that make it the obvious recovery walk for the whole visit: take as much or as little of its length as the legs allow, with plenty of benches and cafés along the way.

The two car museums are Stuttgart's headline sightseeing draw and both suit sore legs well, since neither requires significant walking to see everything on offer. The Mercedes-Benz Museum, in Neckarpark and reachable by S-Bahn, is arranged as a spiralling descent through galleries rather than a flat walking circuit, entry around €16 (£13.70). The Porsche Museum, in Zuffenhausen and also S-Bahn accessible, runs to a smaller building and entry around €10 (£8.60). Either makes a full, mostly-seated or mostly-standing morning without demanding real distance on foot. Königstraße, the main pedestrian shopping street running from the Hauptbahnhof toward Schlossplatz, is flat and long, a reasonable browse-and-eat route on the second day if the museums have been done.

For where to stay, hotels around Schlossplatz and the lower end of the Schlossgarten put a visitor within flat walking distance of the park, Königstraße and the Hauptbahnhof's S-Bahn connections to both museums, worth prioritising over anywhere up in the surrounding hills. For dinner, Swabian cooking dominates the city's restaurant scene: Maultaschen, the large stuffed pasta parcels also found back in Karlsruhe, and Spätzle served simply with melted cheese (Kässpätzle) both turn up widely around the centre, and either suits an evening when the appetite has returned but the legs have not.

Getting to Stuttgart Airport (STR)

Stuttgart Airport is the direct, convenient gateway for a flight home from here, avoiding a return journey through Karlsruhe entirely. The S-Bahn lines S2 and S3 run directly from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof to the airport, journey time around 30 minutes, departing frequently through the day with no reservation needed. This is one of the most straightforward airport connections of any city on this list, well suited to travelling with race kit and no particular need to book anything in advance beyond checking the current S-Bahn timetable before setting off.
