Lake Chala is a deep crater lake on the border with Kenya, listed by the Tanzania tourism authority as a destination in its own right. It makes a quiet, scenic night after a race, but it is a remote trip, so arrange it in advance.

February near Moshi: generally hot and drier between the rainy seasons, though showers happen. Roads to the lake can be rough after rain.

Night One: The Lake

Ask the operator for the exact lodge, the journey time and what the price includes. Do not assume an easy walk down to the water, and do not plan to swim unless the operator confirms it is safe and allowed. If you want to see the rim, ask how far you need to walk and whether there are steps.

Pack a light layer for the evening, insect repellent and any medication you need. Medical facilities outside the main towns are limited, so keep your travel insurance details to hand. FCDO advises against all but essential travel only to the Mozambique border area, not to this part of Tanzania, but check its current regional advice before you book.

Getting Back

Return to Moshi with the same operator and agree the departure time. Leave a margin if you have a flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) the same day.
