The race is run on a Sunday morning, so a gentle Monday suits the legs. Materuni sits on the lower slopes of the mountain, and the visit is built around coffee: picking, pounding, roasting and tasting, with lunch at the farm.
February in Moshi: generally the hot, drier spell between the rainy seasons, though showers happen. The mountain is often hidden behind cloud, so treat a clear view as a bonus. Carry water and sun protection.
The Farm
The normal tour includes a hike to Materuni Waterfall, which the operator describes as about an hour on moderate slopes. After a marathon, ask for the coffee-only version. It is a modified product, not a published option, so request it when you book and agree it in writing. If the operator cannot do it, spend the day at your hotel.
Lunch
Lunch is taken at the farm after the coffee. Tell the operator about any dietary needs when you book.
Getting Back
Keep the driver for the full day. Agree the price and the return time in advance, and leave the hills before dark.
