After the Litoral Marathon: Rio da Onça and the Seafront
The Route: Matinhos hotel → Parque Estadual do Rio da Onça → Caiobá seafront → Matinhos hotel Logistics: A taxi or app car for the short run north to the park. You cannot drive or ride inside it, so the transfer ends at the car park. Marathon Month: July Duration: Day trip
Matinhos hotel ──(taxi, PR-412)──> Rio da Onça park (1.5 km circuit) ──(taxi)──> Caiobá seafront lunch ──> Matinhos hotel
The marathon ends on a Sunday, which makes Monday the natural day for this. Tuesday is not an option, because the park closes then.
July in Matinhos is winter on the Paraná coast. The 30-year climatology gives a mean low of 15°C and a mean high of 20°C, with about 89 mm of rain in the month. A forest park in drizzle is a quiet place, but wet boardwalk is slippery, so wear shoes with some grip and bring repellent, as the park advises.
The park
Parque Estadual do Rio da Onça is a 119-hectare state park at Rua Argentina 99, reached from the PR-412 at Balneário Riviera II, north of central Matinhos. The managing authority lists it as open Wednesday to Monday from 08:00 to 17:00 and closed on Tuesdays. Another government listing gives different days and shorter hours, so ring before you set off. No entry fee is listed, so ask when you register on arrival.
The walking is gentle and short. Five marked trails join into one circuit of 1.5 km that does not double back, and the park describes them as flat and accessible. Raised bridges carry you over sections that flood, and the Mirante das Bromélias is a viewpoint near the treetops. A visitor centre stands at the start of the Trilha Grande. Take the circuit slowly and sit when you want to. Your quads will tell you where the stairs are.
Smoking, alcohol, pets and loud music are not allowed. Stay on the marked trails and carry out everything you bring in.
Getting there and back
Agree a return fare with the driver before you start, or ask the driver to wait. Nothing bigger than the car park is open to vehicles inside the park. If you have a hire car, park there and walk.
Where to eat
Back on the Caiobá seafront, Casa do Camarão at Avenida Atlântica 2010 is listed as a seafood restaurant. Ring ahead for hours, because published times for Sunday and Monday differ. La Bodeguita is recommended for meat and seafood by Hotel Praia e Sol in central Matinhos, so ask the hotel for its current address and opening times.
Getting home
Return to your hotel by taxi. The airport for this coast is Afonso Pena (CWB) in São José dos Pinhais, outside Curitiba, and the road from Matinhos takes between 1 hour 30 and 2 hours 20 by Graciosa bus. Do not book a flight for the same evening.
