Runners finishing Run In Lyon's marathon at Place Bellecour on 4 October and wanting one night somewhere calmer than a city centre have a straightforward option in Annecy, roughly two hours east by rail. The lake and its old town sit on flat ground, which matters more than usual the day after 42.195 km, and the whole visit can run at a slow pace without missing anything essential.

October brings a real change of season here: clear days can be genuinely cold by evening given the lake's altitude and mountain setting, and this is well outside the peak summer swimming season, so the plan below leans on walking and boat trips rather than anything water-based.

Night One: Annecy

The Canal du Thiou runs through the old town's core, flanked by flower-covered bridges and the Palais de l'Isle, a former prison built on an island in the canal that now houses a small local history museum. None of this requires more than a short, flat walk from the station. For the main recovery activity, the promenade along Lac d'Annecy runs for several kilometres on paved, level ground directly beside the water, walkable at whatever pace the legs allow, with benches at regular intervals; a lake cruise from the Thiou quay is the lower-effort alternative and covers much of the same scenery sitting down.

Where to stay: Hôtel du Palais de l'Isle, in the old town beside the canal, keeps everything within a short flat walk. Splendid Hotel Annecy, on the lakefront itself, puts the promenade directly outside the door for anyone who wants to limit walking to what's necessary.

Where to eat: look for a restaurant serving tartiflette or a Savoyard fondue, dishes built for a cool October evening at altitude, widely available around the old town rather than tied to one specific address, and worth prioritising over lighter fare given the change in temperature from Lyon.

Getting Home

Return to Lyon Part-Dieu on the same direct or one-change rail service, roughly 2 hours, with onward connections there to Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport via Rhônexpress for runners flying rather than continuing overland.
