After the Maratona Internacional de Maceió: Maragogi

The Route: Maceió → Maragogi → Maceió–Zumbi dos Palmares Airport (MCZ) Logistics: Hotel-to-hotel transfer sold by a local operator, about 2 hours each way. Agree the luggage allowance first. Marathon Month: August Duration: 3 nights

Maceió ──(about 125 km, roughly 2 hrs)──> Maragogi (3 nights) ──(about 125 km back)──> Maceió–Zumbi dos Palmares Airport (MCZ)

Maragogi lies about 125 km north of Maceió, in the north-east of Alagoas. It has a population of about 33,000, calm beaches with fine sand and a coastline lined with coral reefs. At low tide, sandbanks and pools appear offshore. The best known are the Galés, about 6 km out, and the Croas, about 5 km out. Registered catamarans and smaller boats take visitors to them.

August in Maragogi: the wet season. Rain arrives in short, heavy bursts, and the tide timetable matters more than the calendar. A boat trip to the pools depends on low water and calm seas, and neither can be guaranteed. Keep the plan flexible and never book a trip on the first morning.

Getting There

The operator Luck Receptivo describes the road trip as about two hours and sells daily excursions as well as separate hotel-to-hotel transfers. Book a transfer, not a day-trip vehicle, so your luggage travels properly, and confirm the allowance before you pay. Go on Monday after a slow morning, and ask the driver to stop once on the way so you can walk around and loosen your legs.

Day One: Do Nothing

The first day is unstructured. Settle into a pousada or hotel close to the beach and walk along the water for 20 or 30 minutes on the firmer sand. The beaches here have calm water and little surf, which makes wading comfortable. Eat early and sleep.

Day Two: Decide About the Boat

Check the tide timetable and the weather forecast, then ask your accommodation which operators are running. The boat ride to the pools takes you about 6 km out to the Galés. It is a seated trip, but boarding from the beach involves wading and climbing, which stiff legs may find harder than usual. If conditions are poor or you are tired, skip it. The beach is enough.

Day Three: A Quiet Finish

Walk the beach one more time, sit in the shade through the middle of the day and avoid a late booking that leaves no margin for the transfer. Hotels vary in how they handle late checkout, so ask in advance.

Getting Home

Take a hotel-to-hotel transfer back to Maceió, about two hours, and allow extra time for the road. The airport is Maceió–Zumbi dos Palmares (MCZ). Keep the flight for the following day if you can, so the drive does not decide the schedule. Your Maceió hotel or the transfer operator can arrange the last leg to the airport.
