São Miguel dos Milagres is a small municipality on Alagoas's northern coast, with a population of 8,482 at the 2022 count. Its name means Saint Michael of Miracles, after a statue of the saint that a fisherman is said to have found on a beach. The beaches listed for the municipality include São Miguel dos Milagres Beach, Riacho Beach and Porto da Rua Beach. Two nights give you one full local day without a second intercity journey.
August in the region: this is the wet season on the coast. Expect showers that come and go, warm air and sea, and a day or two of grey cloud. The tide controls what the beaches look like, so check the timetable and keep plans loose.
Getting There
A local operator lists hotel-to-hotel transfers to São Miguel dos Milagres and Porto de Pedras. Ask about the journey time, the luggage terms and the return times before you book. Take the transfer on Monday, after a slow morning, and arrange the return for the afternoon of the third day. Ask whether the transfer can stop on the way if your legs stiffen in the vehicle.
Night One: Arrival
Choose a pousada or small hotel close to the beach and ask about breakfast times, a ground-floor room and how far it is to the nearest restaurant. The village is small, so most places are a short walk from each other. Spend the first evening on a short stroll to the water and an early dinner.
Day Two: One Local Day
Spend the full day close to the pousada. Walk on the beach at a pace that suits the legs, using the firmer sand near the water. Sit in the shade through the middle of the day and swim only where locals say the water is calm. If a boat or reef trip is on offer, check the tide before booking, because pools and sandbanks depend on low water. Keep any boat trip short.
Eat the local fish and drink plenty of water. A massage booked through the pousada, if one is offered, is a good use of the afternoon.
Getting Home
Take the return transfer to Maceió on the third day and leave a margin before any flight. The airport for the city is Maceió–Zumbi dos Palmares (MCZ). If your flight is early the next morning, spend the last night in Maceió, not on the coast.
