Gramado and Canela sit two and a half to three hours north of Porto Alegre by bus, close enough for an overnight extension without eating into the whole trip.
An Easy Change of Register
Late May and early June bring genuinely cool air to the Serra Gaúcha, and Gramado leans into it: log fires, chocolate shops, and a European-influenced townscape built for exactly this kind of unhurried, indoor-friendly day. Treat it as a rest day with scenery rather than a second adventure; long park hikes are best avoided this soon after 42.195 km.
Canela
A short drive from Gramado, Canela is the quieter of the two towns and a reasonable base for anyone wanting fewer crowds without giving up the same cool-climate character.
Where to Stay and Eat
Both towns are dense with pousadas and chocolate-and-fondue restaurants suited to a short, comfortable stay. Book ahead, since the cool season is a popular window for domestic tourism to the region.
Getting Back
Buses run the route back to Porto Alegre in the same two and a half to three hours as the outbound journey, timed around onward flights or the rest of the trip.
