The marathon finishes at the gates of Parque General San Martín. A runner who stays in the city has already done the hard part of this itinerary, which is not moving luggage with sore legs. Two nights in the same room, with short outings from it, is the low-effort way to use the Monday and Tuesday.

May in Mendoza: Autumn. Mendoza airport's May average runs from about 7°C at night to about 19°C by day, so mornings are cool and afternoons mild. Light layers cover most of it.

Night One: Plaza Independencia and the old town

The city is organised around Plaza Independencia, with Avenida Sarmiento running through it. The square is on flat ground and an exterior walk costs nothing and needs no booking. Exhibitions and public events change, so check what is on that week.

From there the Museo del Área Fundacional is the indoor stop. The municipal museum has reopened after renovation and describes accessibility provision. Its published school-visit hours are not the public timetable, so confirm the visitor hours for the Monday or Tuesday you intend to go.

For a bed, Park Hyatt Mendoza is at the square and sits at the top of the price range. The Diplomatic Hotel, in the western central district, has a restaurant on site and is a long step from the square, so plan a short taxi. Ask either about late checkout if the flight is in the afternoon.

For dinner, Azafrán at Sarmiento 765 has a booking link and menus on its website, and Fuente y Fonda serves dishes to share, which suits a table of runners who want to try several things. Confirm opening days before relying on either on a Monday night.

Night Two: the park and a winery day

Parque General San Martín was designed by Carlos Thays and holds the zoo, a football stadium and the university. The finish gates are the marathon's last image, so a short, flat loop on the Tuesday morning is the gentler option. The Cerro de la Gloria at the top gives a view over the city, but it is a climb, so leave it unless the legs allow.

The winery day is covered in the Maipú itinerary. In short, the Metrotranvía runs from central Mendoza to General Gutiérrez in about 30 minutes, and Bodegas López is about 300 metres from the stop. Its restaurant is open for lunch from Wednesday to Sunday, so the Monday and Tuesday visit is a cellar tour and tasting, not a long lunch. Book ahead and return to the hotel by early evening.

Getting Home

Take a taxi or pre-booked transfer to Governor Francisco Gabrielli International Airport (MDZ). The airport authority's page did not give a usable public route, so ask the hotel to arrange it. Many flights from Mendoza connect through Buenos Aires or Santiago, and a connection needs a buffer before an international departure.
