Menton is the last town on the French Riviera before the Italian border, and it has a softer, quieter feel than Nice or Cannes. The train from Nice runs east along the coast past Villefranche and Monaco. In November the town is out of season, which suits a runner who wants a calm night and flat walks after the marathon, though some businesses keep shorter hours.

The Seafront and the Old Town

The seafront promenade runs for several kilometres around the bay, flat and lined with palms, the best recovery walk in town. Above the harbour, the old town climbs the hill in tall, pastel-painted houses, with the Basilica of Saint-Michel at the top of a long flight of steps. Take the steps slowly or admire them from below.

The Jean Cocteau Museum

The Musée Jean Cocteau, beside the seafront, holds a large collection of the artist's work. The small Bastion museum on the harbour wall was decorated by Cocteau himself. Check opening days before planning around either.

Where to Stay and Eat

Stay near the seafront or the station so that the walks stay short. Menton is known for its lemons, and you will find them in pastries, preserves and liqueurs around the old town.

Getting Back

Trains back to Nice run through the day. Tram line 2 runs from central Nice to the airport.
