Ostrava is in the east of the Czech Republic, and Prague is a long way west. A direct train covers it in around three hours, which is the reason this extension works: you leave the city where you ran and arrive in the capital without a flight or a hire car.

September in Prague is busy but pleasant, and the cobbled streets are not kind to marathon legs. Plan for short walking days and plenty of sitting.

Night one: the journey

Take the train from Ostrava. A tourism listing gave a time of about 3 hours 10 minutes, but the document did not open, so check the actual timetable for the day you travel. Book a seat if you can, keep your luggage close and eat on the platform if the dining car is closed.

On arrival, do very little. A hotel near the main station or on a metro line saves walking.

Night two: the old city

Prague's old streets are mostly cobbled and hilly. Pick one or two sights and take trams between them. The Czech capital also hosts the Prague Marathon, which has its own page on this site: Prague Marathon.

Night three: a slower day

Visit one museum, one café and one river bank. Leave the castle hill for another trip.

Where to stay: Pick one near a metro or tram stop and ask about a lift and luggage storage.

Where to eat: Ask your hotel for a local recommendation. Czech restaurants usually serve a hearty lunch menu on weekdays.

Getting to Prague Airport (PRG)

Václav Havel Prague Airport is the main gateway. Take city transport or a taxi, and check the timetable and fares on the day. Allow a generous margin after a long weekend of walking, and avoid the first flight of the day.
