This itinerary links three distinct destinations across four nights using only the CP rail network and one regional bus connection. The routing goes north and east first (Guimarães, Braga), returns briefly through Porto Campanhã, then heads south to Aveiro - with Porto as the transit hub on Day Three rather than a destination.
Book all CP legs at cp.pt before race week. The Guimarães-Braga bus requires a separate check at transdev.pt; confirm the afternoon departure time from Guimarães before committing to the Day Two bus connection.
Day Three transit note: Returning from Braga to Porto Campanhã (60--70 minutes) and immediately continuing south to Aveiro (50--60 minutes) is comfortable if planned. Allow 45 minutes at Campanhã between trains.

Night One: Guimarães
CP Urban Porto from Campanhã to Guimarães in 70 minutes. The medieval city where Portugal's first king was born in 1109: the Paço dos Duques de Bragança (flat interior, 15th-century palace), the Largo da Oliveira and Praça de Santiago (the two central squares, connected by flat granite streets), and the castle on the hill above (reachable on Day Three legs, not Day One).
November in Guimarães: cool (10--14°C), occasionally rainy, quiet. The university gives the restaurants and cafés a weekday energy that the summer tourist trade does not.
Night Two: Braga
Bus from Guimarães terminal to Braga (40--50 minutes, Transdev). Braga station to the Praça da República: ten minutes' walk.
Braga's ecclesiastical centre in a flat city: the Sé de Braga (founded 1070), the Jardim de Santa Bárbara, the Arco da Porta Nova, and the Praça da República with Café Vianna on its corner. Bom Jesus do Monte (5 kilometres east, funicular for the ascent) is the option if the legs permit by Day Two evening.
Nights Three and Four: Aveiro
Return by CP Urban from Braga to Porto Campanhã (60--70 minutes). Transfer at Campanhã to the southbound CP Urban or Alfa Pendular service to Aveiro (50--60 minutes south).
Aveiro: the moliceiro canal cruise from the Praça do Peixe dock (45 minutes, passive), the Art Nouveau canal-side facades, the ovos moles pastry shops, and the Costa Nova bus trip (line 11, approximately 30--35 minutes west) for the striped palheiro houses on the Atlantic spit. The lagoon in November is silver-grey; Costa Nova beach is empty. Everything in Aveiro is flat.
Return to Porto Campanhã from Aveiro on Day Five (50--60 minutes).
Practical Notes
The Guimarães-Braga bus is the one connection requiring advance schedule confirmation; the CP train legs are all high-frequency with no advance booking required (except the Alfa Pendular on the Porto-Aveiro leg if preferred). The overall structure gives two shorter first days (70 minutes of travel each) and a longer transit day in the middle, followed by two nights at the furthest point south.
The reverse order - Aveiro first, then north to Braga and Guimarães - puts the longer transit day earlier, when recovery energy is building most rapidly after the race. Either direction works.
