The CP Regional service on the Linha do Douro departs from Porto São Bento east along the Douro River to Pinhão, taking approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. This is one of the most scenic railway journeys in Europe: the track clings to the gorge wall above the river from Mosteiro onward, the terraced vineyards rising on both sides and the Douro visible below for the final hour. Book at cp.pt well in advance - the service runs only a few times daily and the window seats on the right-hand side of the carriage (heading east) fill first. The journey itself is the first act of the itinerary.
Pinhão station is tiled in blue-and-white azulejo panels depicting traditional Douro harvest scenes - one of the finest tiled station interiors in Portugal. Everything in Pinhão worth visiting is at river level. The terraced vineyards rise steeply on all sides; they are the view, not the destination.
November in the Douro: The grape harvest runs from late September through October. By early November the harvest is finished and the valley has moved into its post-harvest quiet. The vine leaves are turning from gold to copper to bare; the estates have pressed their grapes and the lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia are receiving the new wine. November is one of the quieter months in Pinhão - the harvest workers have moved on, the summer river-cruise tourists are gone. The light in the Douro gorge in November is low-angled and amber on the schist terraces in the afternoon.
Night One: The River Level
Check in and stay at river level. Pinhão is a village of a few hundred people around the station and the waterfront dock. The dock at Pinhão is where the rabelo boats were traditionally loaded with barrels of wine for the journey downriver to the lodges at Gaia; the flat timber dock area and the stone quayside give the best view of the river in both directions and of the terraced slopes above.
The Quinta do Crasto, Quinta do Vale Meão, and Quinta de la Rosa are among the estates nearest to Pinhão; several offer cellar door visits by appointment. Confirm any visits before arrival - November is not the peak visitor period and not all quintas are open to drop-in visitors. Check individual winery websites.
Night Two: The Rabelo Cruise
The rabelo boat cruise on the Douro from Pinhão is the specific post-marathon activity this valley offers: a flat-bottomed wooden boat, the traditional vessel of the Douro wine trade, moving with the river current through the gorge. Several operators run cruises from the Pinhão dock; check current availability at the dock or through your hotel. In November, the river is higher, the gorge views are clear of summer haze, and the vine colours on the terraces above are at their post-harvest bronze.
The alternative to the river cruise is the path along the south bank of the Douro below the N222 road - a flat, quiet walk along the river's edge at river level for several kilometres east of Pinhão, largely missed by visitors following the road above.
Return to Porto São Bento on Day Three (2 hours 30 minutes west, the same scenic gorge in reverse).
Where to Stay and Eat
The Quinta de la Rosa hotel (directly at river level, rooms facing the Douro) and the Vintage House Hotel (directly on the waterfront at Pinhão) are the two principal options - both within a minute's walk of the station.
The wine estates serve the Douro's regional cooking alongside their wines: presunto (cured ham from the Trás-os-Montes to the north), bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (salt cod baked with potatoes, eggs, and onion), and slow-braised meats. The Douro table wines and Port are the pairing throughout.
