Karlovy Vary gives the Prague trip a genuine change of pace: a spa town built around natural hot mineral springs rather than the marathon's own dense historic-centre setting, and considerably calmer than Prague's own May tourist crowds. Two nights allows a properly unhurried recovery stay rather than a rushed day trip.

Early May in Karlovy Vary runs cool, and mornings especially can carry a genuine chill even when Prague itself feels mild; pack for both.

Nights One and Two: Karlovy Vary

The town's colonnades, covered walkways built around its various mineral springs, are the centrepiece of any visit: walking the length of the Mlýnská Colonnade, sampling the warm mineral water from the fountains along the way, is about as directly restorative a post-marathon activity as this trip offers, gentle on legs that ran 42 kilometres two days before.

The surrounding hills, dotted with viewpoints and old spa villas, reward a slower second day once legs have had more time to recover; the Diana Lookout Tower, reached by funicular, offers views over the town without requiring a real climb.

Where to stay: Spa hotels directly along the colonnades put the mineral springs on your doorstep, a genuine point of difference from a standard city hotel.

Where to eat: The town's cafes and restaurants cluster around the colonnades themselves, suited to a slow, unhurried pace rather than a packed evening schedule.

Getting Home
