Weimar is the culture-first counterpart to a race spent almost entirely in forest: 42.2 km of asphalt, gravel and trail from Neuhaus am Rennweg to the finish celebration at Schmiedefeld, followed by a small city built for slow, museum-paced walking rather than any further physical demand. Late May in Weimar is comfortable, generally mild and dry, and well timed for a city whose main appeal is indoors and unhurried rather than seasonal in the way a garden or a coastal town would be.
Weimar sits just fifteen minutes from Erfurt by regional train, one of the shortest and most frequent connections in the region, or is reachable slightly more directly from central Thuringia depending on the starting point. Check the current timetable at bahn.de; services run at least hourly on this short stretch even outside peak times.
Nights One and Two: Weimar
Weimar's old town is small enough to cover on foot without strain, its streets built around the legacy of Goethe and Schiller, who both lived and worked here and whose houses are now the city's two central museums. The Goethe National Museum, attached to the house where he lived for nearly fifty years, and the more modest Schiller House nearby both charge in the region of €12.50 (£11) for entry, and both involve mostly ground-level or lightly stepped viewing rather than sustained climbing. The Duchess Anna Amalia Library, with its famous oval Rococo hall, requires advance timed-entry booking, worth arranging before travelling rather than assuming a walk-up ticket will be available.
For anyone who wants outdoor time without exertion, Weimar's Park an der Ilm runs along the river on flat, well-maintained paths, shaded by mature trees and dotted with benches, a better option for a slow evening walk than anything requiring stairs. The park connects directly to Goethe's Garden House, a modest cottage retreat that predates his grander town residence.
Two hotel options: the Hotel Elephant, a historic property directly on the main market square with the shortest possible walk to every major sight, and a smaller boutique guesthouse in the surrounding streets for a quieter stay at a lower price point. For dinner, a traditional Thuringian restaurant near the market square serving regional sausage and dumplings covers the same reliable ground as elsewhere in the state; a wine bar in the old town, reflecting the area's smaller-scale Saale-Unstrut wine region to the north, makes a good lighter alternative for a second evening.
Getting to Leipzig/Halle Airport
From Weimar, regional rail back through Erfurt connects to Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) in roughly 75 to 90 minutes total, depending on the connection. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is also reachable via Erfurt's ICE line in a little under two and a half hours if that hub suits the return flight better. Booking a specific train in advance on the longer legs tends to be cheaper than a flexible walk-up fare, the same logic that applies to UK Advance rail tickets.
