Twelve minutes on a train is as close to the start of a day trip as it gets. Rotterdam Centraal to Delft costs approximately €4.50 single on an OV-chipkaart, or slightly more on a paper ticket. Trains run every ten to fifteen minutes throughout the day. On the Monday after the Rotterdam Marathon, most runners have sore legs and an appetite for somewhere flat, photogenic, and calm. Delft delivers all three without requiring further planning.
April in Delft: The city's historic centre is crossed by canals and flanked by facades that have changed very little since the seventeenth century. This is the context the Dutch Golden Age painters worked in: Johannes Vermeer was born here in 1632 and spent his entire career within a few streets of the market square. April is shoulder season: busier than winter, quieter than summer, and almost always wetter than expected. The tulips around the Nieuwe Kerk are typically in flower during the first two weeks of the month.
The Walk
From Delft station, the Markt is a nine-minute walk on flat pavement.
The Nieuwe Kerk on the Markt is the burial place of the Dutch Royal House. Its tower climbs 108 metres and offers views across South Holland (approximately €7.50, stairs only - not recommended for legs that ran 42km the previous day). The church at ground level is worth the entry fee regardless.
Immediately across the square, the Stadhuis (Town Hall) dates from the 1600s. The café terraces in front of it serve coffee and beer in conditions that, on a reasonable April afternoon, require nothing more of you than sitting down.
From the Markt, follow Voldersgracht southeast to the Prinsenhof - the palace where Willem van Oranje was assassinated in 1584. The building still has the bullet holes in the staircase wall. Entry approximately €12.50; the permanent collection covers Dutch Republic history without excessive length. Allow 90 minutes.
Royal Delft
Royal Delft (Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, Rotterdamseweg 196) is the last working Delftware pottery factory. It requires a tram or a 20-minute walk south from the Markt. The factory tour (approximately €17) shows the hand-painting process from start to finish and includes a museum of historic pieces. It is one of those places that manages to be genuinely interesting rather than purely commercial, partly because the craft is real and the painters are visibly skilled.
Where to Eat
Restaurant 't Raedthuys on the Markt is reliable Dutch kitchen food - herring, croquettes, stamppot in season - with outdoor seating facing the Stadhuis. The kitchen runs until 21:30. Locus Publicus on Brabantse Turfmarkt stocks over two hundred Belgian and Dutch beers and serves reasonable bar food. Neither requires a booking at midday.
Stroopwafels: Goudse Stroopwafels on Kleiweg in Delft sells them fresh from the iron. This is a materially different experience from the packaged version.
Getting Back
Trains from Delft to Rotterdam Centraal run every ten to fifteen minutes until late evening. Twelve minutes back; no platform changes required.
