After the Seine-Marathon 76: Honfleur
The Route: Rouen → Honfleur → Rouen or onward Logistics: Bus or car via the Pont de Normandie and the Seine estuary. Direct rail is not practical for this leg; check current coach timetables before booking. Marathon Month: September Duration: 1 night
Rouen ──(bus/car via Pont de Normandie)──> Honfleur
Honfleur sits where the Seine finally gives up and becomes the sea, a small harbour town whose Vieux Bassin is ringed with tall, narrow slate-fronted houses that painters have been trying to get right since Eugène Boudin worked here in the 19th century. It asks very little of a runner's legs, which is precisely the point the day after a marathon.
Late September in Honfleur is quieter than the summer crush but still comfortably active, with most restaurants and shops open and the harbour light at its best in the low autumn sun.
Night One: Honfleur
The Vieux Bassin itself is the whole afternoon's activity: a flat cobbled loop around the harbour basin, boats bobbing at anchor, no hills and no reason to rush. Sainte-Catherine, the largest wooden church in France, built by shipwrights using boat-building techniques after the Hundred Years' War, stands a short flat walk from the harbour and costs nothing to step inside.
For anything more active than sitting by the water, the walk is entirely optional, the harbourside benches and quayside cafés do the job just as well.
Where to stay: A harbourside hotel overlooking the Vieux Bassin keeps everything within a two-minute walk. For a quieter option, a guesthouse just back from the water on the streets behind Sainte-Catherine offers the same easy access without the harbour-front price.
Where to eat: A seafood restaurant on the harbour, moules-frites or a simple fish plate, fits Honfleur's identity as a fishing port. For something lighter, a crêperie tucked into the streets behind the harbour is the low-effort alternative.
Getting Home
Return to Rouen by the same bus or car route via the Pont de Normandie. Check the current timetable before travelling, and note that onward connections toward Deauville or Caen are also straightforward from Honfleur if extending the trip further along the coast.
