After the Mt. Rwenzori Marathon: Two Nights near Kibale
The Route: Kasese → Fort Portal area (2 nights) → Kanyanchu tracking → Onward travel Logistics: Book the tracking permit in advance. Keep a fallback for a slow recovery. Marathon Month: September Duration: 2 nights
Kasese ──(driver, about 2 hours)──> Fort Portal area (night 1)
│
Kanyanchu tracking (day 2) ──> Night 2 ──> Onward
The race is on a Saturday, so Sunday is for the road and Monday for the forest. Do not try to fit tracking into the day after the marathon.
September near Kibale: inside the rainy period. Forest trails are muddy, and rain makes the walk longer and slower.
Night One: Rest
The Uganda Wildlife Authority gives a normal transfer of about two hours from Kasese Airstrip to the park headquarters. That is a baseline, not a timetable from the finish. Use the evening to eat well and sleep. Mountains of the Moon Hotel in Fort Portal and Kibale Forest Camp are two places to look at; check current availability and what each includes.
Day Two: Tracking
Tracking at Kanyanchu needs advance booking and a minimum age of 16, and it usually takes between two and five hours on foot. After a marathon that is a real effort, so confirm the terrain with the authority and ask whether a shorter alternative exists. Cancellation terms matter here, so read them before you pay.
Night Two
Return to the same lodge and keep the evening quiet.
Getting Home
Allow a generous margin for the road to Entebbe International Airport (EBB), as the organiser puts the Kasese to Entebbe drive at about eight hours. Medical facilities outside Kampala are limited, so keep your insurance details with you.
