After the Maratona Maga Circe: Sperlonga and Gaeta
The Route: Sabaudia → Sperlonga → Gaeta → Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP) or Rome (FCO) Logistics: A hire car is the simplest option. By public transport, a bus to a station on the Rome to Naples line and a connection via Formia. Check every leg. Marathon Month: February Duration: 2 nights
Sabaudia ──(car, or bus and train via Formia)──> Sperlonga ──> Gaeta ──(train or bus)──> Naples (NAP) or Rome (FCO)
The Maratona Maga Circe ends in Sabaudia on a Sunday, and the coast south of it runs towards Gaeta. The organiser names Formia and the Rome to Naples line in its own transport advice, so the rail link exists, but the last miles need a bus or a car. Check timetables, which thin out on Mondays.
February on the coast is quiet and cool. Many seaside restaurants and hotels close for the winter, so book ahead and check that your chosen places are open.
Night one: Sperlonga
Sperlonga is a small white hill town above a long beach. The seafront is flat and easy, and the old town is a network of steps. Keep the climbing short. Check which restaurants are open in February.
Night two: Gaeta
Gaeta lies further south on a headland, with an old town and a waterfront. The harbour walk is flat, and the old centre is on a slope. Check opening hours for churches and any museum, and ask at the hotel about the best way up the hill.
Where to stay
Stay near the seafront in either town for a flat evening walk. Confirm that the hotel is open in February, and book a refundable room.
Food
Seafood is the usual choice on this coast. Ask the hotel for recommendations and confirm opening days.
Getting Home
Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP) is reached from Gaeta via Formia by train and then a bus or taxi, and Rome Fiumicino (FCO) by the Rome line. Check timetables and allow extra time, since the journey involves more than one change.
