After the Maratona Maga Circe: Rome
The Route: Sabaudia → Priverno-Fossanova → Rome → Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA) Logistics: Neither Sabaudia nor San Felice has a railway station. The organiser advises a Cotral bus to Priverno-Fossanova and a train to Rome, or a direct bus to Rome Laurentina. Check every leg. Marathon Month: February Duration: 1 night
Sabaudia ──(Cotral bus)──> Priverno-Fossanova ──(train)──> Rome ──(airport train or bus)──> FCO or CIA
The Maratona Maga Circe finishes in Sabaudia, and Rome is the natural place for a last night. The organiser's own transport advice for the journey in is the train to Priverno-Fossanova on the Rome to Naples line, then a bus, or a direct bus from Rome Laurentina, so the return follows the same pattern. Timetables are thinner on Monday mornings, and strikes are occasionally announced, so check each leg and allow a margin.
February in Rome is cool and often wet, and daylight is short. Plan the walk for the afternoon and carry a waterproof.
Night one: Rome
The historic centre between Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain is flat and can be walked in a loop of a few kilometres. The paving is cobbled in places, which is tiring on sore legs. Timed tickets are sold for the major sights, so book ahead if you want one, and check opening days, since some museums close on Mondays.
Avoid the hill walks. A bus or taxi is easier.
Where to stay
Stay near Termini station or the flat part of the centre, so the airport link is short. Book a refundable room and ask about lift access.
Food
Roman pasta dishes are easy to find, and restaurants fill early. Ask the hotel for recommendations and book a table.
Getting Home
Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is linked to the city by a direct train and by taxi. Ciampino (CIA) is reached by bus or taxi. Check your airport, the first departures and the morning service.
