The Marathon de Tours finishes at Place Anatole France on the last Sunday of September, and for the first time in 2026 its route runs directly out through Vouvray on the way to Vernou-sur-Brenne. A day trip back out to the same vineyards the day after racing is about as low-effort a recovery outing as this trip offers: short transfer, minimal walking, a chance to see on foot, or from a tasting-room chair, the ground that was under your feet at speed the day before.

September in Vouvray is harvest season. The appellation's chenin blanc vines are typically picked through the month, which means working wineries can be genuinely busy and less available for casual drop-in visits than at quieter times of year. Booking ahead rather than turning up is the safer plan.

Vouvray

The village sits on limestone cliffs above the Loire, and much of its wine production happens in caves cut directly into the rock, a detail worth noting even for a visitor with no particular interest in wine, since it makes the tasting-room experience physically distinctive rather than generic. Cave de Vouvray, 38 rue de la Vallée Coquette, runs an English-language cellar tour and tasting daily from 11:30 to 12:30 through 30 December 2026 [VERIFY EXISTS], a single well-paced hour that asks nothing of legs still recovering from 42.195km.

Beyond the tasting itself, the village centre is small and flat enough for a gentle wander without committing to a longer walk. There is no requirement to see more than one cellar; a single well-chosen visit and a relaxed lunch nearby cover the day comfortably.

Getting Back

Arrange a return taxi or confirm bus timetables before travelling, since Vouvray has no direct rail connection into central Tours. Most organised tours build the return transfer into the same booking, which is the simplest option if travelling without a car.
