After the Townsville Marathon: The Reef and Magnetic Island
The Route: Townsville → Magnetic Island → Townsville → Great Barrier Reef → Townsville Airport Logistics: Townsville is the base. The SeaLink ferry to Magnetic Island takes about 20 minutes, and reef operators run boat trips from the city. Availability depends on the weather, so book flexible arrangements and check each operator's terms. Marathon Month: August Duration: 3 nights

The Townsville Airport Marathon finishes on a Sunday in August. Three nights based in the city lets you build up gradually, starting with air-conditioned rooms and finishing with a day on the water when the legs are ready.
August in Townsville: the dry season. Days are warm and sunny, typically in the mid twenties Celsius, and nights are mild. The sea is usually calm, though a stiff south-easterly can make the outer reef crossings rough. It is outside the main marine stinger season, but check the current local advice. Humpback whales pass the coast in winter and are sometimes seen from boats.
Night One: Townsville and Reef HQ
Start with the indoors. Reef HQ Aquarium on Flinders Street is a large aquarium with a walk-through reef exhibit, and the Museum of Tropical Queensland is close by. Both are level, air-conditioned and easy on the legs. Check the opening hours and prices, and book ahead for any tours.
The Strand, the waterfront promenade, is flat and lined with cafés and a swimming lagoon. A slow walk of a kilometre or two is enough. Jezzine Barracks at the northern end is also worth a short visit.
For a bed, the Ville Resort-Casino is a resort near the ferry terminal, and Rambutan Resort is a CBD base. Both are within a short taxi ride of the Strand. For a meal, Watermark on The Strand serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Shop Six Pasta Bar is a short walk away.
Night Two: Magnetic Island
Take the ferry across, about 20 minutes, and use the island bus to reach Horseshoe Bay. The beach walk is level, and the koala village offers wildlife sessions. Stay the night in Nelly Bay or Horseshoe Bay, and check the accommodation and ferry times before you go.
Night Three: The Reef
By the third day most runners can manage a boat day. Reef operators run day trips from Townsville to the outer reef, and the journey takes a few hours each way, with snorkelling and glass-bottom viewing on offer. Sitting on a boat suits tired legs, but the crossing can be rough, so take seasickness tablets if you are prone to them. Check the operator's terms, the weather policy and the cost, and book flexible arrangements. If the reef trip is cancelled, the aquarium is a useful fallback.
Choosing a Reef Trip
Reef trips from Townsville vary in length and in destination. Some visit reefs closer to the coast and take less time to reach, while others go to the outer reef and involve a longer crossing. Read the operator's description before you book, and choose the trip that fits how tired you are. A shorter trip on a calm day is better than a longer one on a rough day. The reef is a marine park, and operators must follow rules on where snorkellers may go, so listen to the briefing.
If you do not want to snorkel or dive, glass-bottom boat tours and semi-submersibles are also offered by some operators. Check what is included and what it costs. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a rash vest or wetsuit, since the water in August is cooler than in summer and stinger suits are only required in stinger season.
A Slow Third Evening
After the reef, a quiet evening on The Strand is enough. The promenade has cafés and ice-cream stalls, and the swimming lagoon is a safe place to cool off. Watch the light change over the water and the mountains of Magnetic Island turn from green to purple. Check the opening hours of your restaurant, and book on a weekend.
Getting Home
Townsville Airport (TSV) is about 15 minutes by taxi from the city centre, and there is a pre-bookable shuttle. Allow a generous buffer, and avoid booking a reef trip on the day of an international departure.
