After the LGT Alpin Marathon: Feldkirch, Austria

Feldkirch sits just across the Austrian border from Liechtenstein, close enough that Line 11 covers the distance in well under an hour, and different enough in character, a genuinely Austrian medieval town rather than a Swiss or Liechtenstein one, to feel like a real change of scene rather than a suburb of Vaduz. Given how recently a visitor has crossed an entire small country on foot, a flat, easy day exploring a compact old town is a reasonable choice.

Schattenburg Castle

Feldkirch's own hilltop castle, built in the 12th century by the Counts of Montfort, overlooks the old town from above and now houses a local history museum. The climb up is moderate rather than severe, worth pacing sensibly given how recently a visitor has run 42.195 km across genuinely mountainous terrain.

The Old Town

Feldkirch's medieval old town is built around a central square, Neustadt, with narrow arcaded streets and preserved city gates, one of the best-preserved examples of this architectural style in the Vorarlberg region. The Katzenturm, a round medieval tower originally part of the town's fortifications, is one of its most recognisable landmarks.

The Ill River

The Ill river runs along the edge of the old town, offering a flat riverside walk as a lower-effort alternative to the castle climb.

Where to Eat

Restaurants and cafés cluster around Neustadt and the surrounding old town streets, offering Austrian and Vorarlberg regional fare distinct from the Swiss and Liechtenstein cooking found on the other side of the border.

Getting Back

Return by the same direct Line 11 bus service to Vaduz. Check the current timetable before travelling, though the half-hourly frequency means a long wait is unlikely.
