The Marathon de Vannes spends a good part of its 42.195km on coastal paths around the Golfe du Morbihan, so a day trip that stays inside the same Gulf makes sense for the day after: minimal onward travel, and a chance to see the water that framed race day from a boat rather than on foot.

September on the Île aux Moines sits comfortably within the ferry operators' regular season, though the island itself is quieter than in July and August. The crossing is short and level, and once ashore the village itself needs very little walking to enjoy.

The island's name comes from a former monastic community, and its narrow lanes and whitewashed houses give it a distinctly different feel from Vannes' fortified old town, more coastal village than city. The harbour village is the easiest place to spend the day: flat streets, a handful of cafés, and views straight back across the Gulf.

For anyone with legs willing to do a little more, a gentle circuit of the island's near shore is possible without committing to its full perimeter, but the sensible plan the day after a marathon is to stay close to the harbour rather than attempt the longer coastal paths. There's no obligation to see the whole island in one visit; a short walk and a long lunch by the water covers the day comfortably.

Return ferries generally run at regular intervals through the afternoon; confirm the current late-September schedule with the ferry operator before travelling; and allow the same short bus or taxi connection back into central Vannes from Port-Blanc.
