After a marathon built around the Golfe du Morbihan's coastal paths, Nantes offers a deliberate change of register: a proper city, with museums, a compact walkable centre and considerably less uneven ground underfoot. It also works well as a practical staging point for an onward international flight.
September in Nantes brings mild, comfortable city-walking weather without the summer's heaviest crowds, a reasonable month for museum-going and wandering the old town at a gentle pace.
Nights One and Two: Nantes
The Château des Ducs de Bretagne, a moated fortress in the heart of the city, is largely flat within its courtyard and ramparts walk, with the museum inside covering Nantes' history in a largely level, indoor format (entry approximately €9/£7.70, courtyard free). Les Machines de l'Île, Nantes' mechanical animal spectacle including the famous Grand Éléphant, sits on the site of the former shipyards and needs only moderate walking to enjoy (entry approximately €9.50/£8.20 for a single attraction).
The Loire riverside promenades near Île de Nantes are flat and paved, a straightforward recovery walk with plenty of places to sit. The old town around Rue Crébillon and the Passage Pommeraye, a striking 19th-century covered shopping arcade, rewards slow wandering rather than a fixed itinerary.
Where to stay: Hôtel La Pérouse, in the city centre, is a design-led option close to the château and old town. Radisson Blu Hôtel Nantes, near the station, suits a group prioritising easy rail and airport transfers over old-town charm.
Where to eat: La Cigale, a beautifully preserved Belle Époque brasserie near the theatre, serves classic French brasserie dishes in a genuinely striking room, worth the visit for the setting as much as the food. For something more casual, Le Marché de Talensac, the city's main covered market, offers an easy, low-commitment way to eat well without booking ahead.
