The Route: Vilnius → Klaipėda → Curonian Spit Logistics: Direct bus from Vilnius to Klaipėda, journey time around 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours, with around 8 daily departures. From Klaipėda, a passenger ferry crosses to the Curonian Spit in around 7 minutes (a car ferry from a separate terminal takes around 15 minutes), running every 30 minutes in summer and hourly in winter. The Curonian Spit is a 98 km sand-dune peninsula separating a freshwater lagoon from the Baltic Sea, its Lithuanian half a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared, at its southern end, with Russia's Kaliningrad exclave. It is the most distinctive landscape reachable from Vilnius, and also the furthest of the excursions in this batch, a genuine two-night trip once the roughly four-hour journey each way is accounted for.

Night One: Klaipėda's Old Town

Klaipėda, Lithuania's only major port and its third-largest city, carries a visibly different architectural character from Vilnius or Kaunas, shaped by centuries as the Prussian city of Memel before becoming part of Lithuania between the World Wars. Its small Old Town holds half-timbered German-style buildings distinct from anything found further inland.

Where to stay: Hotels cluster through Klaipėda's Old Town, convenient for both the city itself and the short ferry crossing to the Spit. Check current rates and availability before booking, since specific properties were not independently verified in this research pass.

Where to eat: Klaipėda's port-city character supports a strong seafood tradition, distinct from the more inland Lithuanian cooking found in Vilnius and Kaunas.

Day Two: Nida and the Dunes

A short ferry crossing leads to the Curonian Spit itself, where the fishing village of Nida sits among some of Europe's tallest shifting sand dunes, including the Parnidis Dune, reachable by a boardwalk and offering wide views over both the lagoon and the sea from the same vantage point. Traditional Curonian weathervanes, distinctive carved and painted signs once used to identify a fishing boat's home village, still decorate houses throughout Nida.

Getting Home

Getting back to Vilnius: Return by ferry to Klaipėda, then the same direct bus service back to Vilnius. Check current ferry and bus timetables before travelling, since ferry frequency drops outside the summer season.
