23 editions of results, and a national championship for Lithuanian runners

The Vilnius Marathon publishes a complete year-by-year winners table back to its first full marathon distance in 2004, with confirmed course records of 2:19:49 (men, Dmitrijs Serjogins, Latvia, 2020) and 2:43:13 (women, Vaida Žūsinaitė, Lithuania, 2014). Every Lithuanian citizen who runs the marathon distance is automatically entered into the Lithuanian Marathon Championship standings and receives a licence from the Lithuanian Athletics Federation as part of registration.

History

The Vilnius Marathon is organised by Vilnius City Municipality together with the public institution “Tarptautinis maratonas” (International Marathon). The marathon distance was first run on 11 September 2004, when a little over 200 runners from 10 countries completed the inaugural 42.195 km race. A half marathon distance was added in 2006, and the race became a member of AIMS in 2007.

The race grew substantially through the 2010s: entries doubled between 2012 and 2013, from over 5,000 to 10,000 runners across all distances, and the event passed 11,000 total participants in 2019, the same year the organiser introduced a reworked course adding 24.5 km of new streets through parts of the city not previously included on the route. A 2025 official news headline describes that year’s race as the 22nd edition, making 2026 the 23rd.

The race is explicit about a nationality-based participation restriction introduced amid the war in Ukraine: citizens of Russia and Belarus are strictly prohibited from participating unless they hold and can present an official Lithuanian residence permit valid during the event, in which case they may compete only out of competition, ineligible for podium places or awards, and must additionally provide a signed statement not supporting Russian acts of war.

The course

The marathon starts and finishes at Cathedral Square, on Šventaragio Street. The 2026 start time is 08:30, with start corrals closing at 08:20 following an 08:10 warm-up. The organiser’s own description states the course runs through Vilnius’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, green parks, and along the Neris riverbank, a shape substantially reworked in 2019. The organiser states the exact 2026 turn-by-turn route will be specified closer to the event; the map and elevation chart below show the confirmed 2025 course shape, from a real finisher’s device recording, rather than a guaranteed 2026 route.

After finishing, runners must exit the finish area through specially designated exits and are strictly forbidden from walking back over the timing control mat, on pain of having their result annulled; agree an external meeting point with supporters rather than expecting to meet inside the finish zone itself.

The start: Cathedral Square. The marathon and half marathon start together at 08:30, with start corrals closing at 08:20. The first water station for both distances is at km 1.7, an unusually early first stop.

Through the Old Town. The course runs through Vilnius’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, a well-preserved complex of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical architecture within a largely intact medieval street layout.

Green parks and the Neris riverbank. The route also passes through green parks and along the Neris riverbank. Refreshment points continue at roughly every 3 km after the first station, with fruit at every second station.

The second half: gels and Red Bull. Energy gels and Red Bull are available at water stations specifically in the second half of the marathon distance, worth planning around since nothing beyond water and fruit is confirmed for the first half.

The finish: back at Cathedral Square. The course returns to Cathedral Square, with the marathon’s men’s awards ceremony at 11:30 and women’s awards ceremony at 14:40, reflecting how spread out the marathon field’s finishing times are across the day given the 5-hour-30-minute cutoff. A dedicated awards ceremony for participants with disabilities in both the marathon and half marathon distances is held at 14:00.

Logistics Map

No confirmed 2026 turn-by-turn route was available at research time, so the map below shows the 2025 course, plotted from a real finisher’s device recording: a loop from Cathedral Square through the Old Town, parks and the Neris riverbank, back to Cathedral Square. Tap the marker for details.

The start
Cathedral Square

The marathon and half marathon start together at 08:30, with the first water station at an early km 1.7.

Old Town
The UNESCO Old Town

The course runs through Vilnius's well-preserved medieval and Baroque old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Parks & river
Parks and the Neris riverbank

Refreshment points continue roughly every 3 km, with fruit at every second station, as the route passes through green parks and along the river.

The finish
Back at Cathedral Square

Energy gels and Red Bull appear at stations in the second half only; staggered awards ceremonies run through much of the afternoon given the marathon's generous cutoff.

Pacers

No official 2026 pacer programme was found in research.

What to wear

Mid-September in Vilnius generally sits in a mild but variable early-autumn window, with a realistic chance of a cool start and possible rain, though no specific sourced temperature figure was available in research.

Entry

Entry is direct online registration through manobegimas.lt, with no ballot; on-site registration also remains available at the information centre on race day, until 30 minutes before the runner’s chosen distance starts. Entry fees rise across four confirmed pricing windows for the marathon: €39 until 17 September 2025, €49 until 31 March 2026, €65 until 31 May 2026, and €69 until 31 July 2026. Runners registering by 31 May 2026 receive personalised bib numbers.

Changes to registration (distance, name, shirt size) are allowed up to 7 calendar days before the event by email, with a €10 service fee for most changes; switching to a longer distance costs the fee plus the price difference. Deferral to the following year is free with a medical certificate for injury or illness, otherwise €10; transferring a place to another person is allowed only with medical proof, at no fee. The entry fee itself is non-refundable and non-transferable in all other circumstances.

Bib collection details (venue and hours) were not confirmed for 2026 at research time; the organiser states this information will be specified closer to the event. Each participant must collect their own pack at least 2 hours before their chosen distance starts, or risk receiving only the bare bib number without sponsor gifts.

There is no Boston- or London-style GFA route, and no charity or tour-operator entry pathway was found.

Fast Runner / GFA Standards

Not applicable. No evidence of a GFA or fast-runner entry pathway was found.

Race Weekend

Expo

The Information Centre at Cathedral Square opens at 06:30 on race day, with the cloakroom (baggage storage) opening at 07:00. Bib collection venue and hours for 2026 specifically were not confirmed at research time; the organiser states this will be announced closer to the event.

Race Morning

Confirmed via the official preliminary programme: 06:30 Information Centre opens; 07:00 cloakroom opens; 08:10 warm-up; 08:20 start corrals close; 08:30 marathon and half marathon start; 10:30 half marathon awards; 11:30 marathon men’s awards; 14:00 awards for participants with disabilities, followed by a group photo; 14:40 marathon women’s awards.

Baggage storage is at Cathedral Square; each runner may leave one bag, labelled with the sticker provided in the bib envelope, and must collect it immediately after finishing. Loose items are not permitted in storage unless placed inside a bag.

Nutrition on Course

The first water station is at km 1.7, with further stations roughly every 3 km after that. Fruit is available at every second station. Energy gels and Red Bull are available at stations specifically in the second half of the marathon distance only, not the first half. Support and music stations also operate along the course. Toilets are placed on the course itself, and medical staff are on duty for all distances.

Spectating

Because the course starts and finishes at the same point, Cathedral Square is the single most practical base for spectators wanting to see both ends of the race, and is also where the staggered awards ceremonies run through much of the afternoon. The course passes through green parks and along the Neris riverbank; specific mid-course spectator points were not confirmed against an official 2026 map. Named live-tracking app or public-transport-specific spectator advice was not found in research.

Post-Race Food

No specific, sourced restaurant names near Cathedral Square were identified in research. Cathedral Square and the Old Town, Gediminas Avenue and Užupis are all plausible areas given the central start-finish location and Vilnius’s dense old-town restaurant scene, but this page will not name a specific venue without a direct source.

Where to Stay

Because the course starts and finishes at the same point, Cathedral Square, a hotel within walking distance serves both ends of the race equally well.

Gediminas Avenue

The confirmed official accommodation partner, Neringa Hotel, sits directly on this central avenue, offering marathon participants special rates when booking directly with the code NERINGA_VM26. This is the only hotel in this guide with an organiser-confirmed, currently-live discount arrangement.

Old Town and Cathedral Square

The most practical general base given the confirmed start-finish location, putting a runner within walking distance of the race itself and of Vilnius’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed medieval core.

Naujamiestis

A central district generally offering better value than the Old Town itself, at the cost of a somewhat longer walk to Cathedral Square.

Užupis

An atmospheric, artistic quarter within walking distance of the Old Town, worth considering for character over pure convenience; its cobbled streets and slopes are worth weighing against recovery comfort on race weekend specifically.

Booking timeline

Book accommodation 4 to 6 months ahead for a good central location; earlier is better for Old Town or Cathedral Square rooms specifically, since this is Lithuania’s largest running festival with a genuinely central start-finish. The confirmed four-tier entry-fee structure, rising from €39 to €69 for the marathon, means there is also a cost incentive to register, and by extension plan travel, early.

See & Do

These sit at or close to the start-finish, or directly on the course’s own route.

Vilnius Cathedral and Cathedral Square

At the start-finish itself. A Neoclassical cathedral at the historic heart of Vilnius, standing beside its freestanding bell tower on the square that both starts and finishes the marathon.
