Runners pass York Minster at pace on race day, the course's own emotional high point, but always moving. A slower return the day after gives the cathedral the attention it deserves, paired with a walk along the city's historic walls.

York Minster and the Walls

York Minster, one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe, is worth a proper visit inside as well as the view from the street runners get on race day. The city walls, a mostly intact medieval circuit around the centre, offer a historic walk with genuine views, though they involve steps in places and can be tiring after a marathon, so treat this as optional rather than a full circuit.

Where to eat: The streets around the Minster have a good spread of cafés and restaurants, an easy stop either side of sightseeing.

Getting Back

Everything on this itinerary is within York city centre itself, so there is no further travel required.
