History
The Cairns Marathon is one of the younger races on the Australian calendar. Atlas Multisports, now Atlas Events, announced it in September 2018 as the first running festival of its kind in the city, and the first edition was run on 28 April 2019 from Fogarty Park on the Esplanade. The launch material expected up to 4,000 participants across the marathon and its supporting distances.
That first race started at 05:45, allowed 5 hours 45 minutes and went north from the Esplanade towards the Botanic Gardens. Both date and course have changed since. The race moved from late April to July, into the cooler, drier months of the Cairns year, and the marathon is now four laps of about 10.5 km on the Esplanade and the streets of Cairns North.
The festival carries the 7Cairns name through its media partnership with 7NEWS, whose name is also on the marathon itself. The programme runs from the marathon through a half marathon, 10 km and 5 km run and walk to a 2 km family run, all based at Fogarty Park, and the organiser says the festival has sold out seven years in a row. Results are archived by World Athletics; the 2026 women’s race went to Kana Numata in 2:46:26. The organiser’s record table has not been kept up to date, so no course records are given here. The race is AIMS certified, with no World Athletics label.
The Atlas Majors medal
Cairns is one of four marathons run by Atlas Events, with Hobart, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Finish the marathon at all four and Atlas sends a separate Atlas Majors medal. There is no time limit and no required order: after the fourth finish, runners submit a link to each official result through the application form on the Atlas Events website, and Atlas verifies them and posts the medal.
In 2027 Cairns falls five weeks after Brisbane and three weeks before the Sunshine Coast, so three of the four fit into one Queensland winter. It is also the hardest of the four to get into: the entry sells out every year, so anyone collecting the set should secure Cairns first.

The Running Circuits: Your Guide to Marathon and Half Marathon Series
The Atlas Majors alongside the World Marathon Majors, the European Marathon Classics and three other series: how each works, and the 2027 spacing for anyone running all four Atlas races in one year.
The course
The marathon is four laps of about 10.5 km from Fogarty Park; half marathon runners do two. Each lap runs north along the Esplanade with the Coral Sea on one side and the city’s hotels on the other, leaves the waterfront for Lake Street in Cairns North, turns about 4.9 km into the lap and comes back the same way to the park. Runners pass the start and finish at roughly 10.5 km, 21.1 km and 31.6 km before the final run-in.
It is flat. The SRTM profile below stays between 3 m and 9 m for the whole race, and no kilometre rises or falls by more than 2 m. The resolution of the elevation data is coarse against a course this low, so read the chart as confirming there are no hills, not as a map of every gentle rise.
The difficulty is climate and repetition. The pre-dawn start is the coolest part of a July day, with a mean minimum around 17°C, but humidity is high by the standards of most visitors and the sun is up early. Runners out for four hours or more finish in late-morning heat on an open waterfront, and half marathon runners share the road for the first two laps.
Km 0 to 10.5: lap one. The gun goes at 05:45, before sunrise, with marathon and half marathon runners starting together. The first lap is the most crowded and the easiest to run too fast: the road is flat, the air is at its coolest and the field is packed. Run at or slightly below goal effort, and note where the Lake Street turn and the drinks stations are, because the next three laps repeat them.
Km 10.5 to 21.1: lap two. The sun is up and the Esplanade has little shade. Half marathon runners share the whole of this lap and finish at the end of it, so the course is at its busiest. Keep left where marshals say so and do not weave: extra distance adds up over four laps.
Km 21.1 to 31.6: lap three. The half marathon field has gone and the road opens out. This is where humidity starts to cost anyone who went out hard, and a pace that felt easy on lap one may now take noticeably more effort. Drink at every station.
Km 31.6 to 42.2: lap four. The hottest lap and the quietest at the Cairns North end, but also the most familiar: every landmark has been passed three times already. The crowd builds again approaching Fogarty Park.
Chip timing is used. Kilometre marker frequency, timing mats and any shortest-route line have not been published for 2027.
Course Map
The four laps overlap exactly, so the line draws as a single out-and-back from Fogarty Park to the Lake Street turn. Tap a marker for details, and scrub the slider or press play to move the orange marker along the course with the elevation profile beneath it.
Pacers
Official pacers cover 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 4:45 and 5:00, plus a sweeper. They wear yellow pacer singlets and carry helium balloons marked with their finish time. Marathon and half marathon start together, with start zones allocated by expected finish time. The People Carrying the Balloon explains what a pacer manages over those hours, and how to become one.
What to wear
July is the coolest month of the Cairns year, but the long-term mean minimum is still about 17°C and the maximum about 26°C. Race kit is enough at the start for almost everyone; a throwaway layer is only worth it on an unusually cool or windy morning.
Humidity is what surprises visitors. It stays high early in the day and sweat evaporates slowly, so runners heat up faster than the thermometer suggests. Wear the lightest, most breathable kit you own and test it in warm conditions before race day. Anti-chafe care counts for more than usual. For how warm mornings change pacing and race planning, see The Heat Is On.
The Esplanade has little shade. The sun rises during the first lap, and anyone out for more than three and a half hours runs the last lap in strong sunshine, so put sunscreen on before the start and wear a cap or visor and sunglasses.
Entry
Entry is open, with no ballot and no qualifying time, but the festival has sold out seven years in a row, so the question is timing. For 2027, early access goes first to runners on the organiser’s waitlist, at the lowest price of the year, from late September 2026. Join the waitlist and enter the day your release opens.
| 2027 release | On sale | Price | Approx. GBP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Access | Waitlist members, from late September 2026 | Lowest of the year | |
| First Release | 29 September to 8 December 2026 | A$220 | £117 |
| Second Release | 9 December 2026 to 2 March 2027 | A$240 | £127 |
| Third Release | 3 March to 11 May 2027 | A$260 | £138 |
| Final Release | 12 May to 10 July 2027 | A$280 | £149 |
Sterling figures use A$1 = £0.53 and are a guide only. Entry includes a 2027 race shirt, a finisher’s medal, a chip-timed personalised bib, on-course aid and finish-area refreshments. The organiser describes the course as a Boston qualifier. A relay category lets a group share the marathon distance.
Charity fundraising runs through official partners, historically including Ronald McDonald House Charities North Australia and Cure Cancer; ask at booking whether a charity place carries a guaranteed entry once the general field has sold out. Transfer, refund and deferral terms for 2027 have not been published. Recent editions allowed transfers with a deadline and fee, but do not assume a deferral is available, and read the rules before booking non-refundable travel.
Fast Runner / GFA Standards
There is no good-for-age route. Atlas’s elite assistance programme is open to Australian athletes with a qualifying result from the previous 18 months, linked to official results; international elite athletes are considered case by case. Elite waivers and pacing are two of the routes to a free place set out in How to Race Without Paying the Entry Fee.
| Tier | Men | Women | Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elite | Under 2:20 | Under 2:45 | Free entry, up to A$500 travel if more than 150 km from Cairns, elite area |
| Sub-elite | Under 2:25 | Under 2:50 | Free entry, up to A$300 travel |
Race Weekend
Expo
In 2026 bibs were collected at the event precinct in Fogarty Park on the Saturday before the race, from 08:00 to 16:00. Runners brought their registration QR code or photo ID, and someone else could collect with the runner’s confirmation email. There was no race-day collection. Australian residents could pay A$15 to have the bib posted, with a deadline about five weeks out; merchandise was not posted.
Overseas runners should be in Cairns by the Saturday. Fogarty Park is on the Esplanade in the middle of the city, so collection is a walk from most hotels.
Getting to the Start
| Race-day start times (2026) | Time |
|---|---|
| Marathon and half marathon | 05:45 |
| 10 km | 08:00 |
| 5 km run and walk | 10:00 |
| 2 km family run | 11:00 |
Stay within walking distance. Hotels on the Esplanade and in the CBD behind it are a few minutes from Fogarty Park, and Cairns has no rail system to fall back on before dawn. No free race-day transport has been announced. Anyone staying further out should book a taxi or rideshare in advance and check the road closure plan, because the Esplanade is the course.
Recent editions have run staffed bag storage at the precinct, using the tag on the bib, with portable toilets in the event village. Keep the warm-up short: in humid air it is easy to overheat before the gun. After the finish come the medal and refreshments in the recovery area at Fogarty Park, and walking back to a central hotel is quicker than any vehicle while the roads are closed.
A 05:45 gun means breakfast at about 03:00, hours before any hotel buffet opens, so bring your own. Race Morning Fuel covers what to eat and how to manage it from a hotel room.
Nutrition on Course
Recent editions have provided water and electrolyte drink at stations around the lap, with marked litter zones. On a four-lap course each station comes round four times, which makes drinking easy to plan: note the stations on lap one and use every one after halfway.
The 2027 station positions, drink brand and any gels have not been published, so carry your own gels until the athlete guide says what is provided. A special-needs bottle service was offered at the first edition; whether it still runs is not confirmed.
Spectating
Cairns is an easy marathon to watch. The course passes Fogarty Park at the end of every lap, so a supporter can stay on foot in the city centre and see a runner several times without any transport. The park has the start, the finish, toilets and food. The Esplanade north of it, where the course runs out and back, shows a runner heading north and again coming back a little later.
Itinerary A: Fogarty Park only
Watch the start, stay at the park for the end of each lap at about km 10.5, km 21.1 and km 31.6, and remain for the finish.
Itinerary B: two points on the Esplanade
After the start, walk 10 to 15 minutes north along the Esplanade footpath to see runners pass outbound and again inbound on each lap, then walk back to Fogarty Park for the finish.
Itinerary C: limited mobility
Stay at or near Fogarty Park throughout and use live tracking, if offered, to time short moves between the finish chute and a nearby spot on the Esplanade. Cross only at marked crossings: with four laps and the half marathon on the road, runners come through almost continuously.
Post-Race Food
Most finishers are done before many kitchens open, so start with the finish-line refreshments and a shower. Piato Mediterranean Restaurant at The Pier Marina, 1 Pierpoint Road, is a short walk from Fogarty Park and serves Sunday lunch from 11:00: pasta, grilled meat and mezze at a seated table. The dining area around The Pier groups several restaurants together, which helps if one is full.
For an earlier brunch, the restaurants in the large Esplanade hotels are close to the finish and set up for breakfast crowds; check that they serve non-residents on a Sunday.
Where to Stay
The race starts and finishes at Fogarty Park, so stay as close to the central Esplanade as the budget allows. Bib collection, race morning and the walk back after the finish are then all on foot.
Esplanade and Fogarty Park
The southern and central Esplanade is the most convenient base, a few minutes from the race precinct. Waterfront bars make Saturday nights busy, so ask for a quiet room. Prices are at the top of the Cairns range on race weekend.
Cairns CBD and Abbott Street
The CBD, immediately behind the waterfront, has the widest range of hotels, most 5 to 15 minutes from Fogarty Park, with supermarkets and restaurants on the doorstep. It is the best all-round choice for a first visit.
Northern Esplanade
The northern Esplanade is quieter and more resort-like, 15 to 30 minutes from Fogarty Park depending on the hotel. The course runs along it, so taxis cannot reach some addresses while roads are closed; the upside is seeing the race from the front door on every lap.
Cairns North
Cairns North, behind the northern Esplanade, has apartments and motels at lower prices and a quiet Saturday night. The course turns on Lake Street here. Expect 25 to 40 minutes on foot to the start, or a taxi booked before the closures.
Parramatta Park and Edge Hill
Parramatta Park, west of the CBD, suits self-catering stays at 20 to 35 minutes’ walk from Fogarty Park, away from the tourist strip. Edge Hill, near the Botanic Gardens, suits a longer holiday more than race weekend: it needs a taxi or a long walk to the start.
Recommended hotels
On the Esplanade at Spence Street, the closest of these to Fogarty Park and to the marina restaurants for Sunday brunch. The waterfront can be busy at night, so ask for a quiet room.
On Abbott Street, one block back from the water, a few minutes’ flat walk to the start. Bars nearby can be noisy on a Saturday night.
A large full-service hotel near the marina, a short walk to Fogarty Park and to the Reef Fleet Terminal for a Green Island trip the next day.
Further up the Esplanade and quieter, on the course itself, so you see the race go past on every lap. Still an easy walk to the start.
Booking timeline
There is no ballot date, and the festival sells out, so the trigger is the moment your entry is confirmed. Join the early-access waitlist, enter on release, and book a refundable central room the same day.
July is the height of the Cairns dry-season holiday period, so race-weekend demand sits on top of normal demand for Esplanade hotels and reef trips. In 2026 the organiser partnered with Oaks Cairns Hotel for a discounted race rate; check for a renewed partner once entries open. The date is fixed, so long-haul flights can be booked early. Many overseas visitors connect through Brisbane or Sydney. Aim to arrive by Friday, since bib collection has been on the Saturday only. Cairns is nine hours ahead of the UK in July, a difficult eastward shift; Beating Jet Lag for Marathon Tourists sets out how to start adjusting before you fly.
See & Do
Two of these are on foot from the finish. The reef, the rainforest and the gardens need a boat, a train or a taxi, and each suits a different day after the race.
Cairns Esplanade Lagoon
0.2 km (0.1 miles) from finish. A free saltwater swimming lagoon beside Fogarty Park and the easiest place in the city to get tired legs into cool water without going into the sea. Check for race-weekend access changes near the event precinct.
Cairns Aquarium
1 km (0.6 miles) from finish. An indoor aquarium in the city centre, air-conditioned and with little walking, useful if the legs rule out a boat day.
Green Island
27 km (17 miles) by boat from the Reef Fleet Terminal. The gentlest way onto the Great Barrier Reef: a flat coral cay reached by ferry from beside the marina, with glass-bottom boat trips that keep walking to a minimum. The full day is under After the Race.
Kuranda by Skyrail and Scenic Railway
25 km (16 miles) from finish. A rainforest village reached by heritage train one way and a cableway over the canopy the other, so most of the day is seated. Better two days after the race than one.
Cairns Botanic Gardens
4 km (2.5 miles) from finish. Tropical gardens in Edge Hill with level paths through the formal gardens. Leave the steep Red Arrow circuit until the legs have recovered.
Reading
Iain McCalman’s The Reef: A Passionate History tells the story of the Great Barrier Reef through the people who charted, exploited and studied it, from Cook onwards. Cairns is the main gateway to the reef, and the book gives context to the trip most runners take after the race.
After the Race
July is the middle of the Far North Queensland dry season, with warm days, lower humidity than summer and calmer reef conditions in most years. It falls outside the main marine stinger season, and patrolled beaches keep their stinger nets in place. Every trip below can be taken without a car.
A flat coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef with a glass-bottom boat, a beach and boardwalks through the island’s rainforest, reached by ferry from beside the marina.
Up to the rainforest village by heritage train and back over the canopy by cableway, with most of the day spent sitting down.
A flat 1.5 km beachfront path, a 300 m jetty and netted swimming in the dry season, with restaurants along the Williams Esplanade.
Four Mile Beach, Macrossan Street and a shuttle into Mossman Gorge in the Daintree, where the Wet Tropics meet the reef.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stay near the start or the finish?
They are the same place, Fogarty Park on the Esplanade, so stay on the Esplanade or in the CBD behind it. Cairns has no rail system and the Esplanade is the course, so walking to a pre-dawn start is the simple option.
How far in advance should I book a hotel?
The day you register. The festival has sold out seven years running, and July is peak season in Cairns, so race-weekend demand sits on top of ordinary holiday traffic.
Is there free transport to the start on race day?
No free race-day transport has been announced, and there is no urban rail. Most runners walk. If you stay further out, book a taxi in advance and check the closure plan.
What is the best area to stay?
The central Esplanade and the CBD, a few minutes from Fogarty Park. The northern Esplanade is quieter but a longer walk. Cairns North and Parramatta Park are cheaper, 20 to 40 minutes on foot.
When does the expo open?
In 2026 bibs were collected at Fogarty Park on the Saturday, 08:00 to 16:00, with no race-day collection. Bring your registration QR code or photo ID, and plan to arrive by Friday.
What is the weather typically like on race day?
Warm and humid even in July, the coolest month: about 17°C at dawn and 26°C at the day’s warmest. The start is the coolest part of the day; the open Esplanade is hot by mid-morning.
How do I get from the airport?
Cairns Airport is close to the city. Taxis, rideshare and shuttles run from the terminals; a taxi is simplest with luggage. After that, a central hotel needs no transport all weekend.
Is there a bag drop?
Recent editions have run staffed bag storage at Fogarty Park using the tag on your bib. Opening times for 2027 will be in the athlete guide. Leave valuables at the hotel.
Should I bring a throwaway layer?
Usually not. July dawns in Cairns average about 17°C and most runners are comfortable in race kit. Sunscreen and a cap are more useful than an extra top.
How do I get back to my hotel after finishing?
Walk: central hotels are a few minutes from Fogarty Park and cars are slow while the Esplanade is closed. The northern Esplanade is 20 to 30 minutes on foot.
